Two students sent to hospitals after being hit by slow-moving Milpitas school bus

Emergency crews responded to Roswell at Edsel drives in Milpitas for an accident involving a school bus that hit two young students shortly after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 5).
Cheryl Jordan, Milpitas Unified School District's assistant superintendent of human resources and the district's public information officer, said she received a phone call about the two Milpitas Unified elementary school students being hit by a district bus around 2:08 p.m., and arrived on scene shortly thereafter.
Milpitas Police Department, Milpitas Fire Department, the California Highway Patrol and American Medical Response all responded.
By 2:30 p.m., Jordan said she had received little information of what happened except that of the two children hit, none sustained serious injuries and only one was transported to a local hospital. Half an hour later, however, the second student, who had originally claimed she was fine, called 911 reporting severe pain from her Ashland Drive home and was transported to a local hospital also.
Janean L. Reynolds, a California Highway Patrol community service officer on scene, said it was her understanding that there were children on board the school bus -- which had stopped at the Roswell and Edsel stop sign -- and when it began to accelerate and turn left, the two students were crossing the street at the same time the bus was turning, and were hit.

"It was going from an extremely slow speed," Reynolds said, noting it had to be going no more than 5 miles per hour when the incident occurred. She was on scene to field questions from parents. Further details will be posted once they are known.

I am particularly proud of this story because I went beyond capturing the first day of school through kindergartners' eyes with my reporting and stepped up to take complementary pictures, since none of our photographers were able to make the assignment.
